Why we built it
Since October 2018, every business in England that sells animals as pets has worked under a single set of licence conditions and a star rating that is published for customers to see. The rating depends as much on records as on husbandry: an inspector can only award what the business can show. Most shops keep those records on paper, across folders, clipboards and a laptop in the office, and the week before an inspection is spent finding them.
PetCompli replaces that with one system where the daily checks, cleaning, policies, training and the animal register are kept as they happen, each mapped to the condition it evidences. The owner sees what is overdue today; the inspector sees three years of history in order.
Who is behind it
PetCompli is founded by James Heysmond, who has spent years building software for regulated, multi-site businesses in the UK. It is designed with pet retailers and with the licensing officers who inspect them.
How we write our guides
Every guide on this site is written from the legislation on legislation.gov.uk and the statutory guidance on GOV.UK, gov.scot and gov.wales, with the sources listed at the end. We write dates and figures only where the source states them, and we say when something is a council's own policy rather than the law. The guides are reviewed when the rules change, and the review date is shown on each page. They are general information, not legal advice.
Accessibility and language
The app and this site are built to WCAG 2.2 AA, work on a phone, and are available in English and Welsh. Read our accessibility statement.
